The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urged Nigerians to make it a habit to read food labels before purchasing packaged foods, warning that unhealthy dietary choices are contributing to the growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.

Speaking at the launch of the Read the Food Label Campaign in Abuja, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said the initiative is designed to help consumers better understand nutritional information and make healthier food choices. The campaign is being implemented in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), and the University of Abuja, among other partners.

Adeyeye encouraged consumers to check key information on food packaging, including the ingredients list, nutrition facts, expiry date, and NAFDAC registration number, before making a purchase. She noted that reading labels can help people limit excessive intake of salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats, which are major risk factors for chronic illnesses.

NAFDAC said the campaign forms part of its broader efforts to improve public awareness of food safety and nutrition, empowering Nigerians to make informed decisions that promote healthier lifestyles
