The Lagos State Government has announced plans to immediately demolish illegal structures obstructing canals, drainage channels, and drainage rights of way in parts of the Lekki axis, including Agungi, Ajiran, and Ikota, as part of efforts to curb persistent flooding.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the decision after inspecting key drainage infrastructure and flood-prone locations in Lekki, Agungi, Ikota, and Ajiran. He said the inspection revealed that recurring flooding in Agungi was caused by the deliberate blockage of the Ajiran outfall channel, preventing stormwater from flowing into the Lagos Lagoon.
Wahab stressed that while the government respects private property rights, no landowner has the authority to obstruct public drainage infrastructure. He directed that the blocked channel be reopened immediately and warned that all structures built on reclaimed drainage alignments or canal rights of way without approval would be removed.
The commissioner also cautioned developers and residents against encroaching on wetlands and drainage corridors, saying such practices worsen flooding and endanger surrounding communities. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations to protect lives and property during the rainy season.
