The Ecuadorian government has declared a national holiday after the country’s stunning 2-1 comeback victory over Germany secured qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
President Daniel Noboa announced that Friday, June 26, would be a nationwide holiday to allow Ecuadorians to celebrate the historic achievement. In a message to the nation, he praised the players and coaching staff for overcoming criticism and difficult moments to bring joy to the country.
Ecuador came from behind after conceding an early goal to defeat the four-time world champions, with Nilson Angulo equalising before Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive winner in the second half. The victory sent Ecuador into the World Cup knockout rounds for only the second time in the nation’s history, having previously reached that stage in 2006.
The national holiday applies to both the public and private sectors, with essential services such as healthcare and emergency response continuing to operate. The government said the decision was intended to unite the nation in celebrating one of the greatest moments in Ecuadorian football history.
