There is outrage in Kogi State after members of a local vigilante group allegedly beat and killed a mentally challenged university student.

The victim, Andrew Amehson Aziko, a 400-level student of Prince Abubakar Audu University, was reportedly attacked at the Nana College of Health, Okpo in Olamaboro Local Government Area.

According to reports, the student—said to have mental health challenges—had wandered into the school premises after escaping from a rehabilitation centre.

Eyewitness accounts allege that vigilante operatives beat him severely and later shot him, despite recognising him and knowing his identity.

A video of the incident, which circulated online, reportedly showed the victim pleading with the attackers before the fatal assault, further fueling public anger.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident, stating that the student sustained serious injuries during the assault and was later confirmed dead at a medical facility.

Police authorities said homicide detectives have been deployed, and efforts are ongoing to arrest the vigilantes involved, who are currently at large.

The killing has sparked widespread condemnation, with residents describing the act as barbaric and unjustified, especially given that the victim was unarmed and known in the community.

Authorities have also warned that vigilante groups and private security personnel have no legal right to inflict punishment, stressing that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.
