The Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State has denied allegations that its officers shot at protesting students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) in Calabar.
In an official statement, the police described a viral video circulating online as misleading and inaccurate, insisting that there is no evidence that live ammunition was used on the protesters.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the protest—triggered by the death of three students in a road accident—initially began peacefully before it turned violent at some point, prompting security intervention.
The command stated that officers were deployed ahead of the demonstration to maintain law and order and prevent escalation, adding that they engaged student leaders in dialogue during the protest.
