Portuguese manager José Mourinho has completed an unbeaten league season with Benfica, guiding the club through the entire 2025/26 Primeira Liga campaign without suffering a single defeat.
Benfica sealed the remarkable achievement after defeating Estoril Praia 3-1 in their final league match of the season. The result ensured Mourinho’s side finished the campaign with 23 wins and 11 draws across 34 matches.
Despite the historic unbeaten run, Benfica failed to win the Portuguese league title, finishing third in the standings after dropping crucial points through numerous draws during the season.
The campaign marked Mourinho’s emotional return to Benfica, the club where his managerial career briefly began 25 years ago before he rose to global prominence with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Roma.
Football analysts have described the season as one of the most unusual unbeaten campaigns in recent European football history, with Benfica becoming “Invincibles” without lifting the league trophy.
Mourinho’s achievement has also reignited conversations about his future, with growing reports linking him to a sensational return to Real Madrid following Benfica’s impressive season. The Portuguese coach recently confirmed that discussions involving his representatives and the Spanish club had taken place, although no formal agreement has been announced.
Speaking after Benfica’s final match, Mourinho praised his players for their resilience and mentality throughout the season, insisting the unbeaten record reflected the team’s consistency and fighting spirit.
While missing out on the title remains a disappointment for Benfica supporters, Mourinho’s unbeaten campaign has further added to the decorated manager’s legacy as one of football’s most accomplished and resilient coaches.
