Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has officially unveiled Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 Kano State governorship election.

Kwankwaso made the announcement in a statement released ahead of the party’s affirmation exercise, describing the decision as one based on loyalty, competence, equity, and the need to strengthen unity within the Kwankwasiyya political movement.

He also confirmed former Kano deputy governor Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna as the NDC candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.

Gwarzo is regarded as one of Kwankwaso’s longtime political allies and previously served as Deputy Governor of Kano State under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf before resigning earlier this year following political disagreements and party realignments.

Before becoming deputy governor, Gwarzo also served as Commissioner for State Affairs during Kwankwaso’s administration and earlier held office as Chairman of Gwarzo Local Government Area.

Political observers say the development signals a major consolidation move within the Kwankwasiyya camp as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections in Kano State.

The NDC has recently emerged as a significant opposition platform attracting several prominent northern politicians, including Kwankwaso and allies who previously belonged to other major political parties.

Kwankwaso expressed confidence that the party would record victory in the forthcoming elections and prayed for a peaceful and successful affirmation process.
