The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has dismissed claims that the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is politically motivated, insisting that his arrest and continued custody are strictly based on ongoing corruption investigations and court orders. In a statement made during court proceedings, the commission said El-Rufai remains in lawful custody under a valid remand order issued by a magistrate court, and that all actions taken so far are in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
The ICPC explained that it is investigating allegations of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and money laundering linked to transactions carried out during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023.
According to the agency, the initial detention was approved by the court to allow it complete its investigation within a legally defined timeframe, after receiving petitions alleging large-scale diversion of public funds and questionable contract awards.
The commission also noted that subsequent extensions of the remand order were granted by the court, while earlier attempts by El-Rufai’s legal team to overturn the detention order were dismissed.
Responding to public commentary suggesting political interference, the ICPC maintained that it does not conduct “media trials” and urged Nigerians to rely on court proceedings rather than social media narratives.
The case has continued to generate widespread reactions across political circles, with supporters of the former governor describing the detention as politically driven, while the ICPC insists it is strictly a legal process anchored on evidence and judicial approval.
Court proceedings in the matter are expected to continue as investigations and prosecution efforts progress.
