Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is “dead” following a fresh wave of defections rocking the National Assembly.
Speaking during plenary, Akpabio made the remark after several lawmakers formally announced their exit from the party to other platforms, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Labour Party.
Reacting to the frequent defections, he said:
“I think ADC is dead,”
The comment, delivered in a light tone, drew reactions in the chamber as lawmakers continued to switch parties.
Akpabio also mocked the growing trend of political cross-carpeting, questioning how often lawmakers can defect within a short period. He suggested that instead of repeated announcements, defecting members should compile their movements collectively to avoid what he described as a “daily ritual” in the Senate.
The development comes amid a broader political shake-up ahead of the 2027 elections, with multiple lawmakers citing internal crises and prolonged litigation within the ADC as reasons for leaving the party.
In the House of Representatives, the situation is similar, with at least 16 members reportedly dumping the ADC for other parties, further weakening its presence in the National Assembly.
