Nigeria’s Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has resigned from her position, marking a significant shift within the federal cabinet.
Her resignation is linked to a directive requiring political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down ahead of the 2027 elections, a move aimed at ensuring fairness and focus in the political process.
Reports indicate that the former minister is preparing to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, specifically the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State a position she previously held for about 16 years.
Her decision is seen as both strategic and procedural, allowing her time to reconnect with grassroots supporters and strengthen her political base ahead of the elections.
Onyejeocha, who served in the labour ministry under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, played a role in labour negotiations and employment policy coordination during her tenure.
