A tragic incident has been reported in Cross River State, where a young man lost his life during a rehearsal for a Passion of Christ drama.
The victim, Michael Obeten, a Mass Communication graduate, died after being struck by debris from a malfunctioning explosive device used as part of the performance effects.
The incident occurred at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, during preparations for the Good Friday reenactment.
Obeten, who had previously played the role of Jesus Christ in past editions, was reportedly coaching other participants when the device intended to simulate thunder malfunctioned. A fragment hit his head, causing severe injury.
Eyewitnesses initially thought it was part of the act, but the situation became clear when blood was seen flowing, prompting urgent efforts to save him. He was rushed to medical facilities but later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has left the church and the entire community in mourning, especially as it happened during the solemn Easter period.
