About 75 Nigerians have reportedly lost more than ₦100 million after falling victim to a fake Canadian visa scheme allegedly organised by an individual who promised them relocation opportunities abroad.
According to reports, the victims were convinced that they would secure Canadian visas and jobs, prompting many of them to sell property, rent out their apartments and borrow money to meet the demanded fees, which ranged between ₦3 million and ₦12 million per person.
One of the victims, identified as Mr. Promise, reportedly paid about ₦11 million and even resigned from his job after being assured the travel process would be completed quickly. However, the promised visas never materialised, leaving him and others in severe financial distress.
Sources close to the victims said many are now struggling to cope with the losses, with some unable to pay their children’s school fees or meet basic needs after exhausting their savings to pursue what they believed was a legitimate relocation opportunity.
The incident highlights the growing problem of visa and migration scams targeting Nigerians eager to relocate abroad for work or better living conditions. Authorities and migration experts have repeatedly warned prospective travellers to verify visa processes through official embassy channels and avoid dealing with unlicensed agents.
