At least two miners have been killed and several others injured during a fight among rival groups in a mining area in Zamfara State, local sources and residents report.
The incident occurred in the Dankandan mining site in Talata Mafara Local Government Area, where disputes over control of mining operations and mining routes reportedly escalated into violent clashes between competing miners on Saturday.
According to eyewitnesses, the fight began when two groups — each claiming rights to parts of the site — confronted one another, leading to the use of sharp weapons and machetes and resulting in fatalities and injuries. Some of the wounded were taken to the Gusau Specialist Hospital for treatment, while others were treated on the spot by community health workers.
Residents described the atmosphere at the mining site as tense, with community members and miners expressing concern about rising insecurity and the absence of effective conflict-resolution mechanisms in the area.
The bodies of the deceased were reportedly taken to the Talata Mafara General Hospital morgue, and families of the victims have called on the Zamfara State Government and security agencies to intervene and prevent further clashes that could result in more deaths.
Local community leaders also urged miners and their groups to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid violent confrontations that could put more lives at risk.
