Norwegian authorities have arrested three brothers suspected of carrying out a bombing at the United States Embassy in Oslo, in an incident being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.
Police said the suspects, Norwegian citizens of Iraqi origin in their twenties, were taken into custody in Oslo following investigations into the explosion that occurred over the weekend. The blast, which happened in the early hours of Sunday, damaged the entrance to the embassy’s consular section but did not cause any injuries.
According to police prosecutor Christian Hatlo, authorities are still trying to determine the exact motive behind the attack. Investigators are examining several possibilities, including whether the bombing may have been carried out on behalf of a foreign state or linked to criminal networks.
Preliminary findings indicate that an improvised explosive device (IED) was used in the attack. Officials believe one of the brothers may have planted the device while the others allegedly played supporting roles in planning or executing the act.
The suspects were reportedly not previously known to law enforcement, and authorities are continuing interrogations to determine the extent of their involvement. Norwegian security services are also cooperating with US authorities and the FBI as the investigation continues.
Although the explosion caused limited structural damage, the attack has heightened security concerns around diplomatic missions in Europe amid rising geopolitical tensions globally. Norwegian officials said the case is being treated seriously as a potential terrorist act, with further updates expected as the investigation progresses.
