Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore joined protesters in Aba, Abia State, as demonstrators gathered to demand the release of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The protest, which drew supporters and activists from different groups, saw participants marching through parts of the commercial city while chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards calling for Kanu’s freedom. Demonstrators insisted that the IPOB leader should be released after spending several years in detention.

Sowore, who addressed the crowd during the demonstration, reiterated his position that Kanu’s continued detention raises serious concerns about the rule of law and respect for human rights in Nigeria. The activist has consistently advocated for the release of individuals he believes are being unlawfully detained.

The rally in Aba is part of a broader campaign by pro-Biafra supporters and activists pushing for Kanu’s freedom. Similar protests have taken place at different times across the South-East and other parts of the country as supporters continue to demand his release.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021 after he was arrested and brought back to Nigeria from Kenya. He is currently facing charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, supporters of the IPOB leader maintain that he should be freed, arguing that his detention has fueled tensions in parts of the country. Activists, including Sowore, have therefore continued to call for peaceful protests and legal efforts aimed at securing his release.
