Soldiers Foil Cattle Rustling, Kill Terrorists, Arrest Suspects in Benue Operation
Troops of the Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have foiled a cattle-rustling attempt and neutralised suspected terrorists during a series of security operations in Benue State.
According to the military, the operations were conducted between March 3 and March 7, 2026, following credible intelligence about criminal activities in parts of the state.
The Acting Media Information Officer of the task force, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu, said troops of the Chief of Army Staff Special Intervention Battalion IX intercepted suspected rustlers during a patrol around Obagaji in Agatu Local Government Area.
During the operation, three suspected cattle rustlers were arrested and stolen livestock recovered, preventing the criminals from escaping with the animals.
In a separate encounter, troops reportedly engaged terrorists attempting to operate in the area, leading to a gun battle in which some of the attackers were neutralised while others fled into nearby forests.
The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke, Maj.-Gen. Moses Gara, reassured residents that the military remains committed to protecting lives and property across Benue and neighbouring states.
He also urged members of the public to continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies, stressing that cooperation from local communities is essential in tackling cattle rustling, banditry and terrorism in the region.
