The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists in possession of a firearm and live ammunition inside the The Polytechnic, Ibadan (POLYIB) campus, security sources say.
According to the police, the suspects Sunday Adewale (23) and Ayodele Tijani (25) were apprehended at College of Business and Management Studies on Thursday afternoon after operatives acting on credible intelligence combed the Polytechnic environment. They were found with a locally made pistol and three live cartridges concealed in a bag.
Their arrest followed increased surveillance and anti-cult patrols by the police in tertiary institutions across Oyo State, aimed at preventing cult-related violence and unlawful possession of weapons on campuses.
The suspects were immediately taken into custody and will be charged to court on counts of unlawful possession of firearms, cultism and other related offences, the command’s spokesman said.
Police also assured students and staff that enhanced security measures will continue to make campuses safe zones and urged residents to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
