The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has recovered three bodies and rescued five passengers after a commercial bus plunged into a river along Amuloko Road in Ibadan, the state capital.

According to the Chairman of the agency, Maroof Akinwande, the accident occurred when a Suzuki passenger bus carrying eight people reportedly lost control and crashed into the Ariyo River. The agency said it received a distress call about the incident and immediately dispatched rescue personnel to the scene.

Akinwande explained that upon arrival, firefighters and emergency responders launched a rescue operation which resulted in five passengers being pulled out alive, while three others were recovered dead from the river. The survivors were taken to Ona-Ara Private Hospital in the Jegede area of Ibadan for medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased victims were later handed over to officers from the Ogbere Divisional Police Headquarters, who were led by ASP Aishat Ibrahim, for further investigation and necessary procedures.

Authorities attributed the tragic accident to reckless driving, urging motorists to adhere strictly to road safety rules to prevent avoidable road crashes. The fire service also acknowledged the support of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority and officials of Ona-Ara Local Government, who assisted during the rescue operation.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in the state, with emergency officials reiterating the need for drivers to exercise caution and maintain control of their vehicles, especially along busy and river-crossing routes.
