Nigerians across major cities have expressed frustration after the Dangote Petroleum Refinery increased the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to about ₦995 per litre, triggering fresh increases in pump prices nationwide.

The adjustment has already forced many filling stations to revise their prices upward, with petrol now selling between about ₦1,000 and ₦1,190 per litre depending on location and retail outlet, according to market checks.

Motorists, transport operators and small business owners say the latest hike has further worsened the cost-of-living crisis, as higher fuel prices are expected to push up transport fares and the cost of goods and services across the country.

Industry sources said the refinery’s decision followed volatility in global crude oil prices and rising replacement costs, which have forced adjustments in the downstream petroleum market.

The latest increase comes after a series of rapid price changes within days, with the refinery’s petrol price reportedly rising from ₦774 to ₦874 and then to about ₦995 per litre within the same week.

While fuel supply has remained relatively stable, many Nigerians say the new pricing regime is placing additional pressure on already strained household incomes, with transporters warning that fares may rise further if prices remain high.
