MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, has announced plans to discontinue its streaming platform, Showmax, after 11 years of operation.
The company said the decision followed a comprehensive review of its streaming operations, as it seeks to restructure its digital strategy and focus on long-term sustainability in a highly competitive global streaming market.
Showmax was launched in 2015 in South Africa and expanded across several African countries, offering movies, series, documentaries and local productions to compete with international platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
According to MultiChoice, the service will continue operating for now, and subscribers will be informed ahead of time about the timeline for the shutdown and what steps to take before the platform is finally discontinued.
The move also comes after the takeover of MultiChoice by French media giant Canal+, which has been reviewing the company’s investments and digital operations.
Despite the planned closure, the company said no job losses are expected and it will continue investing in premium content and digital entertainment services across Africa.
