The Nigerian Army has stated that its troops killed 45 suspected bandits but lost a captain and two soldiers during a recent counter-insurgency operation in Katsina State, military sources say.
According to a statement from the Army Headquarters, troops of the 4 Brigade responded to intelligence on bandit hideouts in the Danmusa and Batsari areas of Katsina North Senatorial District and engaged the criminal elements in fierce gun battles over several days.
The military said that during the clearance missions, troops encountered heavily armed bandits and successfully neutralised 45 of the attackers, recovered weapons and ammunition, and disrupted camp networks used by the criminal groups.
However, the operations came at a cost: Captain Pam Luka and two soldiers lost their lives in the engagements, with the Army paying tribute to the fallen personnel and commending their bravery.
The statement also noted that additional troops were wounded and have since been evacuated for medical attention.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to curbing banditry and restoring security in Katsina and neighbouring North-West states, urging communities to support security efforts and provide actionable intelligence to hasten the defeat of criminal gangs.
The operation was part of ongoing efforts to tackle widespread banditry that has plagued parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnappings, cattle rustling, and attacks on villages have become frequent.
