Some youths in Lagos State have taken to the streets to protest the persistent power outage affecting several parts of Nigeria, expressing frustration over the worsening electricity situation in the country.
The protesters, mostly young residents from affected communities, gathered with placards and marched through parts of the state, calling on the Federal Government and electricity distribution companies to urgently address the power crisis. They lamented that the prolonged blackout has disrupted daily activities and crippled small businesses that depend heavily on electricity.
According to the protesters, the unstable power supply has forced many households and business owners to rely on expensive alternatives such as petrol and diesel generators, further increasing the cost of living. They said the situation has become unbearable amid rising fuel prices and economic hardship.
Some of the placards carried during the demonstration reportedly read messages such as “Give Us Light,” “Enough of Blackout,” and “Fix the Power Sector Now.” Protesters also accused electricity distribution companies of issuing estimated bills despite the poor power supply.
The demonstration comes at a time when Nigeria is experiencing a significant drop in electricity generation, leading to outages across many states. Industry stakeholders have attributed the crisis to issues including gas supply shortages, debts owed to gas producers, and operational challenges in the power sector.
Residents have therefore called on the government to urgently intervene, warning that continued power failures could further damage economic activities and worsen the hardship already being faced by many Nigerians.
