President Bola Tinubu has declared himself a “diehard democrat,” reaffirming his commitment to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law in Nigeria. The president made the statement during an interfaith breaking of fast meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee and leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).

Tinubu said his belief in democracy is deeply rooted in his political journey and personal convictions, stressing that the philosophy of democratic governance “will live and die with me.” He recalled the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists during Nigeria’s struggle against military rule, including protests, detentions and exile by members of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and other groups.

According to the president, strengthening internal democracy within political parties is essential to building credible electoral institutions and sustaining Nigeria’s democratic system. He noted that democratic governance thrives when both the majority and minority voices are respected within the political process.

Tinubu also assured political leaders that his administration would continue to promote free and fair elections, emphasizing that the rule of law must remain central to Nigeria’s democratic structure. He maintained that every citizen and political actor must willingly participate in and respect the democratic process.

The president’s remarks come amid ongoing political discussions about governance, electoral reforms and the future of Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Tinubu reiterated that ensuring democracy and national unity remains one of the key legacies his administration aims to leave behind.
