Four police officers have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force for their involvement in the killing of seven traders during a patrol operation in Lagos State, authorities say.
The dismissed officers ASP Hakeem Yusuf, ASP Stanley Essien, PC Favour Nwabuko and PC Amos Mgbede were attached to the Ikorodu Division and were accused of fatally shooting the traders on January 20, 2026, during what was initially described as an anti-cultism operation in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh announced the sacking after findings from a Police Service Commission (PSC) disciplinary panel confirmed that the officers acted outside the rules of engagement and failed to follow proper procedures during the patrol.
The incident had sparked outrage across the state, with residents, traders’ unions and civil society groups calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims. The families of the deceased also demanded accountability and compensation.
In addition to dismissal from service, the officers are to face prosecution in a court of competent jurisdiction on murder charges related to the deaths of the seven traders.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring that law enforcement officers adhere to professional standards and respect the rights of citizens while carrying out operations.
