At least four people have died and 18 others sustained injuries in a stampede during the distribution of annual Ramadan zakkat (alms) at a residence in Katsina metropolis, police and local sources report.
The tragedy occurred around 9 p.m. on Thursday (February 26, 2026) at the home of philanthropist Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki in Kofar Guga Quarters, where a large crowd had gathered to receive alms ahead of Ramadan. As residents surged toward the compound, some individuals allegedly forced their way in, triggering panic and a deadly crush.
Security personnel from the Central Police Station, Katsina, were quickly deployed to the scene to restore order and assist the injured. The victims were taken to the General Hospital, Katsina, for medical attention, where four of them later died from their injuries. Those confirmed dead include women and a teenage girl, according to local reports.
Police have since invited the organisers of the distribution for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances that led to the deadly stampede. Authorities also called for better planning and crowd control measures at similar events in the future to prevent such tragedies.
