Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on citizens to abandon what she described as an “entitlement mentality” and instead cultivate a mindset of hard work, self-reliance and collective responsibility.
She made the appeal while speaking at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration in Abuja, where she emphasised the need for personal initiative, resilience and community support as Nigeria strives to overcome economic and social challenges. The First Lady said that a shift in attitude would help strengthen national unity and boost productivity.
In her remarks, Oluremi Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to embrace hard work, value education, support small-scale enterprises and contribute positively to national development, saying that reliance on government handouts or expectations of quick gains can undermine progress and self-esteem.
She also highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment and inclusion as central to achieving broader socio-economic transformation, urging citizens to reject passivity and instead take active roles within their families and communities.
The First Lady’s message comes amid ongoing debates about economic conditions, unemployment, and social welfare expectations in Nigeria, with policymakers and civil society groups frequently discussing how best to encourage self-sufficiency and national productivity.
