Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a 24-year-old man, Iziga Jude Ikechukwu, popularly known as “Easy-money,” over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency during his birthday celebration.
According to the anti-graft agency, the suspect was arrested by officials of its Enugu Zonal Directorate after a viral video surfaced on social media showing him mishandling and spraying naira notes inside a hotel room while celebrating his birthday.
The EFCC said it launched a preliminary investigation after receiving intelligence from the video, which helped identify the suspect and trace his residence around the Timber Market area of Enugu-Ezike in Enugu State, where he was eventually arrested.
During the operation, officials recovered ₦81,700 suspected to be part of the naira notes allegedly mutilated during the celebration. The commission noted that the act violates Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits abuse or defacing of the national currency.
The EFCC added that investigations are ongoing and the suspect will be charged to court once the probe is concluded.
