Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted 248,500 tablets of Tramadol Hydrochloride (250mg) valued at about ₦273.35 million during an anti-smuggling operation in Yobe State.

The seizure was disclosed by the Controller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘D’, Bauchi, Abdullahi Ka’ila, during a press briefing on Monday.

According to Ka’ila, the interception followed credible intelligence indicating that a large consignment of the controlled drug was being transported through covert routes in Gumsi Village, Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State.

He explained that surveillance teams launched a coordinated covert operation, which led to the recovery of the large quantity of tramadol tablets believed to be part of an organised trafficking network.

Customs officials added that the suspected smuggler abandoned the drugs and fled into nearby bushes after spotting patrol vehicles approaching the area.

The NCS said the seizure would help curb the illegal circulation and abuse of tramadol, a highly potent controlled substance often linked to addiction and criminal activities among youths.

Authorities also noted that the operation disrupted a suspected trafficking syndicate with links beyond Nigeria to neighbouring countries and international markets.

The Customs Service reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intelligence-led operations and collaboration with other security agencies to combat drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.
