Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 13 Brigade have successfully foiled an ambush by suspected gunmen in Odonget Community, Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State, killing four of the attackers during a fierce gun battle.
The operation followed intelligence reports about rising tension in the community linked to a communal dispute, prompting soldiers deployed at nearby locations to move into the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
According to the Army’s Assistant Director of Public Relations for the 13 Brigade, Lt. Yemi Sokoya, troops encountered a coordinated ambush by armed criminals while attempting to clear obstructions and stabilise the situation in the community.
Reinforcements from the 245 Battalion were quickly deployed with armoured and tactical vehicles after troops on the ground reported the attack. The swift response enabled the soldiers to repel the ambush and overpower the gunmen.
During the exchange of gunfire, four of the attackers were neutralised, while several others reportedly escaped into nearby forests. Security forces have since launched a cordon-and-search operation in surrounding communities to track down the fleeing suspects.
