The Abia State Government has officially commenced the full rollout of a cashless payment system for its Green Shuttle Bus Service, introducing the Abia Connect Card to streamline fare collection and modernise public transport within the state.
Under the new arrangement, commuters on both intra- and inter-city Green Shuttle routes will no longer pay fares with cash. Instead, passengers must tap the Abia Connect Card available at designated shuttle terminals and authorised agent locations across Aba and Umuahia on payment devices when boarding buses.
According to a statement from the Abia Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the cashless system is designed to eliminate the inconveniences associated with cash transactions such as delays, disputes over change, and revenue leakages while enhancing efficiency, transparency and commuter convenience across the state’s transport network.
Residents can obtain their first Abia Connect Card free of charge, provided they present a valid ABSSIN, and top up their card with funds before use. Those without an ABSSIN can also register through the Abia Pay portal to receive their cards.
Once funded, cards remain valid indefinitely, and regular fares for Green Shuttle services including inter-city trips such as Aba to Umuahia and Umuahia to Ohafia are paid via the cashless system, with taps confirmed acoustically at boarding.
The state government said the initiative aligns with its broader efforts to build a digital, transparent and efficient transport ecosystem and urged commuters to adopt the new payment method as part of Abia’s ongoing transition toward smarter urban mobility.
