A member of a local vigilante group has reportedly shot and killed a fellow operative in Plateau State, in an incident that has raised questions about discipline and internal tensions within community security outfits.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday morning in Vom, a community in Jos South Local Government Area, where members of the Hunters Vigilante Group were conducting a routine patrol. Security sources say the deceased, identified as Jafar Umar, was shot by a colleague following what was described as a minor dispute between the two men.

Officials from the Nigeria Forest Security Service in the area confirmed awareness of the incident, though details remain limited as investigations are still underway. Area Commander Pam Gyang Pwajok told journalists he had instructed officers to probe the circumstances surrounding the shooting and provide a full report. He noted that his team was still gathering facts at the time of the statement.

After the shooting, the suspect reportedly surrendered to police, and authorities have begun investigations into the matter. Efforts to obtain comment from the Nigeria Police Force’s Plateau State command were unsuccessful as officials did not immediately respond to requests for further information.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the oversight and regulation of local vigilante groups, which are often mobilised to support formal security operations but can, at times, lack adequate training and discipline.

As investigations continue, residents and security watchers are waiting to see what charges, if any, will be brought against the suspect and how authorities plan to prevent similar clashes among community vigilantes in the future.
