The United States government has approved the deployment of approximately 200 military personnel to Nigeria to strengthen security cooperation and support the country’s fight against insurgency.

According to officials from U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, the troops will arrive in phases over the coming weeks. Their mission will focus strictly on training, advisory, intelligence, and logistical support roles, not direct combat operations.

The deployment is aimed at boosting Nigeria’s capacity to combat extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), which have remained active in parts of the North-East and surrounding regions. U.S. personnel are expected to assist Nigerian forces in areas including:

  • Counter-terrorism strategy and battlefield coordination
  • Intelligence gathering and analysis
  • Air-ground operational integration
  • Equipment maintenance and technical training
  • Tactical planning and surveillance support

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters emphasized that Nigerian armed forces will retain full operational control, and the American troops will serve only in an advisory capacity.

Security analysts say the move reflects growing military cooperation between Abuja and Washington, particularly amid ongoing efforts to stabilize volatile regions affected by insurgency, banditry, and cross-border terrorism. The U.S. has previously provided Nigeria with military equipment, training programs, and intelligence-sharing support under bilateral security agreements.

Officials describe the deployment as part of a broader effort to strengthen regional security in West Africa, especially as extremist groups continue to exploit instability in the Sahel region.

Further details regarding the duration of the mission and specific training locations have not yet been publicly disclosed.
