A member of the United States Congress, Representative Riley Moore, has claimed that Christians in Nigeria have disproportionately suffered violent attacks for more than two decades and has called on President Donald Trump to take decisive action, including stronger bilateral measures and humanitarian support.

Speaking about escalating insecurity in Nigeria, Moore acknowledged that violence affects people of all faiths, but insisted that Christians are “five times more likely” to be targeted, alleging that Fulani militias and terrorist groups frequently attack Christian communities, burn churches and schools, and kill pastors and worshippers.

He praised President Trump’s willingness to “defend Christians globally” and described the current moment as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity” to strengthen US-Nigeria relations while confronting insecurity. Moore proposed that any future bilateral agreements should be contingent on measurable commitments from the Nigerian government to protect vulnerable communities, co-fund humanitarian assistance, deploy security forces and implement early-warning systems for attacks.

Moore also urged Trump to consider sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals found to be involved in or tolerating violence against Christians  a stance that reflects broader legislative efforts in the US Congress to address religious persecution and insecurity in Nigeria.

The comments come amid ongoing US debate over Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for religious freedom and discussions on possible policy responses to persistent violence affecting communities in the Middle Belt and beyond.
