The United States Embassy in Abuja and its Consulate General in Lagos have announced that they will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2026, in observance of Presidents’ Day, a federal holiday in the United States that honors past U.S. presidents.
In a statement published on their official websites, the diplomatic missions said that all visa and passport services, consular appointments, and routine administrative operations will be unavailable on the holiday. The embassies urged visa applicants, U.S. citizens, and residents in Nigeria who rely on consular services to plan accordingly and schedule urgent matters either before the holiday or after services resume on Tuesday, February 18, 2026.
The notice highlighted that emergency assistance for U.S. citizens, including issues relating to safety, medical emergencies, or urgent travel, remains available 24/7 through the embassy’s emergency contact lines. U.S. citizens in Nigeria are encouraged to have their emergency contacts ready and to register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely updates.
Officials also advised that individuals seeking non-urgent services such as document authentication, notarisation, or routine visa processing should expect delays due to the holiday closure.
This announcement comes as part of the U.S. diplomatic mission’s regular observance of federal holidays, ensuring that staff observe national traditions while maintaining essential emergency support for American citizens abroad.
