A tragic accident in Akure, Ondo State has left the community in shock after two students reportedly drowned in a hotel swimming pool while on a break from school activities.

The incident occurred at a popular hotel and event centre in the state capital, where students of a private university had gathered for a social outing. According to eyewitness accounts, the students entered the swimming pool during the afternoon, but soon got into difficulty in the water. Efforts to rescue them were made by bystanders and hotel staff, but unfortunately both victims succumbed before they could be pulled out alive.

The identities of the deceased have not been officially released, but sources said they were final‑year students at the institution. The university management is said to be in contact with the families of the victims and offering support as investigations continue.

Local authorities, including the police and emergency responders, visited the scene soon after the incident. A statement from the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that the bodies were recovered and taken to a morgue for autopsy, while a formal investigation has been launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the drownings.

The hotel management has also pledged cooperation with the authorities as they seek to establish what safety measures were in place at the pool and whether any negligence contributed to the tragedy.

The news has elicited an outpouring of grief from fellow students, friends and family members online, with many expressing sadness and calling for stricter safety protocols at recreational sites to protect young lives.
