President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Acting Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to make the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) more effective, disciplined and trusted by the public as part of efforts to tackle rising insecurity across the country.
Speaking at a decoration ceremony at the State House, Abuja, where Disu was formally installed as Acting IGP following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, President Tinubu said the appointment came at a critical moment for national security. He urged the new police chief to rebuild public confidence in the force and ensure the safety of lives and property across Nigeria.
“You must lead the Nigeria Police Force with discipline, professionalism and fairness,” Tinubu told Disu, emphasising the need for inter-agency collaboration and putting citizens’ welfare at the centre of policing’s mandate. The president reiterated his full support for Disu’s leadership and described the challenges facing the force including banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities as key priorities requiring decisive action.
Disu, who previously held senior roles including leadership of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Lagos, pledged to end impunity within the police and adopt a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and misconduct. He said officers will be trained to respect human rights and work more closely with communities to improve security outcomes.
The transition marks a high-profile leadership change in Africa’s largest police force, signalling a renewed effort by the federal government to strengthen law enforcement and enhance public trust, ahead of heightened security demands and the 2027 general elections.
