A suspected member of the Eiye confraternity has been brutally hacked to death in a renewed cult clash in Ibadan, Oyo State, raising fresh concerns over violent rivalries among secret cult groups in the South-West.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Ojaigbo area of Ibadan, where the victim, identified simply as Ope, was attacked by suspected members of the rival Aye confraternity, also known as the Neo-Black Movement. According to reports from anti-cultism advocacy platform Confra Naija, the deceased was previously known within the Eiye group as a “number four” member — a position suggesting significant involvement within the confraternity.

Sources indicate that the attack happened on Monday, though the precise trigger of the confrontation remains unclear. Witnesses alleged that the assailants used machetes and other dangerous weapons during the assault. The victim reportedly sustained severe injuries and died at the scene before help could arrive.

The attackers are said to have fled immediately after carrying out the assault, and as of the time of reporting, no arrests had been officially confirmed.

Cult-related violence has remained a recurring security challenge in parts of Oyo State and other South-West states, with rival confraternities frequently engaging in retaliatory attacks. These clashes often result in fatalities, property damage and heightened tension within affected communities.

Security operatives are expected to intensify surveillance and investigations in the area to prevent possible reprisal attacks. Community leaders have also called for stronger enforcement measures and youth engagement programmes to curb the influence of cult groups.

The latest killing adds to growing concerns about the persistence of secret cult activities in urban communities, despite repeated police crackdowns and public awareness campaigns.
