Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has been linked with the vacant managerial position at Olympique de Marseille, as the French Ligue 1 club continues its search for a new head coach following the exit of Roberto De Zerbi.
Marseille parted ways with De Zerbi after a difficult run of results, including a heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and an underwhelming European campaign. The club’s management is now reviewing several candidates as it aims to stabilise performances domestically and strengthen its competitiveness in continental competitions.
Chelle, 48, who took over as Nigeria’s head coach in 2024, has reportedly attracted attention due to his work with the Super Eagles, where he guided the team to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His tactical discipline, structured defensive approach, and ability to manage high-profile players have enhanced his reputation within European football circles.
Sources indicate that Chelle’s name has been recommended to Marseille’s hierarchy by intermediaries, but he is not the only coach under consideration. Other candidates, including former Marseille defender Habib Beye, are also believed to be in contention for the role.
Despite the speculation, no formal offer has been made to Chelle, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reiterated that he remains under contract with the Super Eagles, with one year left on his current deal. Federation officials have stressed their focus on maintaining stability within the national team setup, particularly with upcoming international fixtures and qualification campaigns on the horizon.
Any potential move would require negotiations between Marseille, Chelle, and the NFF, making the situation one to watch in the coming weeks.
