The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that seven people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in a major road accident on the Kwanar Barde–Gezawa axis of the Kano–Bauchi highway on Sunday. The incident involved a heavy-duty trailer that reportedly lost control, colliding with multiple vehicles along the busy highway.
FRSC Sector Commander in Kano, Sani Usman, said preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving, speeding, and possibly overloading were key factors that led to the crash. He emphasized that the corps is working closely with local authorities to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
According to witnesses at the scene, the trailer veered off course, hitting nearby vehicles and causing panic among motorists. Rescue teams, including FRSC personnel and volunteers, were quickly deployed to evacuate the injured and remove debris to restore traffic flow along the highway. Several victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment, while some sustained life-threatening injuries.
This incident adds to the growing concern over road safety in Nigeria, particularly along highways frequently used by heavy-duty trucks. FRSC officials have repeatedly warned that speeding, overloading, and poor vehicle maintenance remain leading causes of fatal road accidents across the country.
Commander Usman urged all motorists, especially drivers of trucks and trailers, to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, observe speed limits, and ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition. He also called on the public to report reckless driving to authorities to help prevent further tragedies.
The FRSC said it would continue to intensify road safety enforcement, including roadside checks and public awareness campaigns, to reduce the frequency of fatal accidents and save lives.
