At least seven people have been killed and several others injured in separate violent attacks in Benue State, highlighting a growing security crisis in the region.
In the first incident, suspected armed herders stormed Entekpa community in Adoka, Otukpo Local Government Area, reportedly arriving with cattle before opening fire on residents. Five villagers were killed, while dozens were injured, and several homes were burnt or looted, according to local sources. Witnesses said the attackers used the herd as a diversion before attacking the community.
Hours later, gunmen ambushed a commercial bus on the Utonkon–Okpoga Road, killing two passengers and abducting multiple travellers, who were reportedly taken into nearby bushes. Security forces have confirmed the deaths and launched search and rescue operations to locate and free the abducted victims.
The attacks have sparked fear and panic among residents, many of whom have fled their homes. Local leaders have called for increased military and police patrols, stressing the urgent need to protect vulnerable communities in both rural and highway areas of Benue State.
Authorities are investigating both incidents and have urged anyone with information to cooperate with security agencies. Analysts warn that such attacks, often linked to herder-farmer conflicts and criminal gangs, continue to threaten stability and livelihoods in the state.
