The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that the ₦100 million mistakenly transferred into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, was a banking error and that the funds were promptly returned.
Spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme that Victor himself noticed the unexplained credit and instructed his accountant to reverse the transaction immediately, which was done. He also presented his bank statement to police to confirm that the entire amount was refunded.
According to Hundeyin, Victor even closed the bank account involved and has since filed a petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure the circumstances of the erroneous transfer are investigated.
The police described the incident as a genuine mistaken payment and stressed there was no wrongdoing by Victor or his father. Authorities are urging the public to await the outcome of the EFCC probe for a clearer picture of how the error occurred.
