The Enugu State Police Command has arrested five men in connection with the alleged murder of a suspected rapist, authorities and local reports say.
According to the state police public relations officer, Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects were apprehended after the body of the deceased — identified as Emeka — was discovered with multiple stab wounds in Ibagwa Nike community of Igbo-eze South Local Government Area. Police said the victim was believed by residents to have been involved in an alleged rape before he was killed.
The arrests followed heightened tensions in the community, where angry youths reportedly chased and attacked the suspect before he was overpowered. The police later recovered the body and began investigations.
Ndukwe stated that efforts are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the killing, and the suspects will be charged in court once the investigation is completed. He also urged members of the public to allow the legal process to take its course and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
The development has drawn attention to rising frustrations in some communities over perceived slow justice in sexual violence cases, even as authorities warn against mob action and reinforce that suspects are entitled to due process under the law.
