A Nigerian national, identified as Emeka Uzor, has been shot dead in Johannesburg, South Africa, prompting widespread concern from the Nigerian community and calls for a full investigation into the circumstances of his death.

According to a statement by the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA), the 40‑year‑old Uzor was shot at about 3 p.m. on Sunday, 8 February 2026, while in his vehicle at a Caltex filling station in Windsor East, Randburg, a suburb in Gauteng Province. The union described the incident as shocking and deeply worrying, especially given rising concerns about attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.

Uzor, who hailed from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was at the filling station when unknown gunmen approached him and opened fire, according to NUSA. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In reaction, NUSA called on the South African Police Service (SAPS), including the Minister of Police and the National Commissioner, to ensure a thorough, transparent investigation to find and prosecute those responsible. The union also urged the Nigerian Mission in South Africa and the Federal Government to engage with South African authorities to secure justice for the deceased and his family.

The union appealed to Nigerians living in South Africa to remain calm, united and law‑abiding as security agencies handle the case. It warned against retaliation but emphasised the need for protection and support for Nigerians in the country.

The killing has reignited concerns within the diaspora about the security and welfare of Nigerian expatriates, many of whom have repeatedly appealed to both governments to enhance safety measures for citizens abroad.
