A 30-year-old Nigerian man has been tragically shot dead during a nightclub shooting in Brooklyn, New York, following an altercation with another patron, authorities and family members say.
The victim, identified as Sheriff Shittu, an aspiring fashion designer based in the United States, was killed in the early hours of February 14, 2026, at the Quilox Restaurant and Lounge in the East Flatbush area of Brooklyn. Police say the fatal shooting occurred around 4:25 a.m. after a dispute with a drunken man whose behaviour had caused tension inside the club.
According to Shittu’s younger brother, the trouble began when the man allegedly inappropriately touched female guests, including Shittu’s girlfriend, prompting a physical tussle before the suspect left the club. Shittu and his brother temporarily walked out, but returned shortly after when Shittu realised he had left his cellphone behind. It was at that point while the suspect was being escorted out by security that he allegedly opened fire, striking Shittu.
Emergency responders rushed Shittu to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Centre, where he was later confirmed dead. The suspected shooter fled immediately after the incident and remains at large, according to law enforcement sources.
Shittu’s family described him as a warm, ambitious man who immigrated to the United States from Nigeria in 2018 and was building a career in fashion while working as a security guard. The tragedy occurred just one day before his mother was due to arrive from Nigeria to visit.
Relatives and friends have called for justice, questioning the nightclub’s security measures and urging authorities to swiftly apprehend the suspect as the investigation continues.
