Nigeria joined 106 other United Nations member states in voting in favour of a resolution that voiced support for Ukraine and called for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The resolution titled “Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine” was adopted on 24 February 2026 during an 11th Emergency Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, marking the anniversary of Russia’s military offensive that began in 2022. It passed with a vote tally of 107 in favour, 12 against and 51 abstentions.
By backing the resolution, Nigeria and other supporting countries reaffirmed commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire as a step toward peace.
Notably, several countries including the United States and China chose to abstain from the vote, while a smaller group of states voted against the resolution.
The vote reflects ongoing international diplomatic engagement around the war in Ukraine, with supporters of the resolution emphasising the need to uphold the UN Charter and the principles of international law in seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
