The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission (NCDC), Senator Titus Zam, has clarified that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is not a member of the committee, dismissing claims that she was excluded from its proceedings.
Zam made the clarification following a controversy that arose after Akpoti-Uduaghan reportedly protested her omission from a recent budget defence session involving the NCDC management. The Kogi Central lawmaker had questioned why her name was not listed among committee members during the meeting.
Responding, Zam explained that committee memberships are determined by the Nigerian Senate Committee on Selection, and that representation on a committee is not automatic based on geopolitical zone alone. He stressed that only officially appointed senators can participate in the committee’s oversight functions.
According to Zam, the current committee members include himself as chairman, alongside other designated senators from the North-Central region, and that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s name does not appear on the official membership list.
The clarification has drawn attention to internal Senate procedures regarding committee assignments, particularly as the North Central Development Commission plays a critical role in coordinating development projects across the North-Central geopolitical zone.
Observers say the incident underscores the importance of transparency in legislative committee appointments, especially when oversight of regional development agencies is involved.
Further reactions from both lawmakers are expected as discussions continue within the Senate.
