The Abia State Police Command has taken a man into custody for allegedly killing his girlfriend during a domestic dispute in the Ohafia Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, the suspect — identified as Edward Okorie, a resident of Isiugwu, Ohafia — was arrested after his girlfriend, Sophy Chika, a young nurse from Ozu Abam in Arochukwu LGA, was reportedly beaten to death during an argument at their home in Okagwe village.
Eyewitnesses said the couple, who had been living together for over three years, got into a dispute on Monday morning, and the disagreement escalated violently, resulting in Chika’s death.
The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed Okorie’s arrest and said the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia for a thorough investigation.
Authorities are currently interrogating the suspect as part of efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and prepare charges. Members of the community have expressed shock and grief, with calls for justice and a comprehensive probe into the tragic killing.
