A tragic incident occurred in Oyo State after a middle-aged man lost his life while trying to rescue a goat that had fallen into a deep well in the Saki area of the state.
According to reports, the incident happened late on Monday night when the goat accidentally slipped into the uncovered well within the community. In a bid to save the animal, the man reportedly climbed into the well without any protective equipment or safety support.
Eyewitnesses said the victim became trapped inside the well, likely due to exhaustion, lack of oxygen, or the slippery nature of the well’s interior. When residents realised he was no longer responding, they raised an alarm and contacted emergency services.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Fire Service said it received a distress call at about 10:23 p.m. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene and were able to retrieve the man’s body from the well. Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead on arrival.
The Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Fire Reforms and Chairman of the Fire Service, Moroof Akinwande, explained that the victim entered the well voluntarily in an attempt to rescue the goat but became trapped and could not exit on his own.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the danger posed by uncovered wells across many communities in the state. Fire service officials have urged residents to properly cover wells and avoid entering deep pits without professional assistance, stressing that such rescue attempts can easily turn fatal.
Community members described the deceased as a selfless and courageous individual, while calling on authorities and property owners to prioritise safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
