Oba Simeon Ibiyinka Olaonipekun, the Oniwo of Aafin Ile-Ire in Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State, has regained his freedom after nearly a month in captivity following his abduction by suspected bandits. Family sources confirmed the development, describing it as a relief for the community.

The monarch and his son were abducted on December 31, 2025, during a late-night raid on the palace. Witnesses said the attackers, heavily armed, stormed the palace around 8 p.m., firing sporadically and overwhelming the small security detail. During the attack, the monarch’s wife, Queen Felicia Olaonipekun, was reportedly injured and later treated at a hospital.

While the monarch’s son, Olaolu Olanipekun, a serving NYSC member, was released earlier following an initial ₦20 million ransom, Oba Olaonipekun remained in captivity for weeks. Negotiations with the abductors were reportedly complex, involving community leaders, intermediaries, and private contributors.

According to family sources, the monarch was finally released on Wednesday night after an additional ₦12 million ransom was paid, along with other items demanded by the kidnappers. He was dropped off at a local herders’ settlement near Oreke, Ifelodun LGA, from where he was escorted to a nearby military base and reunited with his family.

Following his release, Oba Olaonipekun received medical attention for physical injuries and psychological trauma. The family expressed gratitude to all those who facilitated his return and urged the government to strengthen security measures to prevent further attacks on traditional institutions.

The incident has highlighted ongoing security challenges in Kwara State, particularly in rural areas vulnerable to banditry. Community leaders continue to call for increased patrols and intelligence-led policing to safeguard lives, property, and cultural leaders.
