Several journalists sustained injuries in a road accident in Bauchi State while covering the commissioning of projects by the North-East Development Commission (NEDC). The crash occurred along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area.
The journalists were travelling in a vehicle attached to the NEDC delegation after covering the handover of a Government Secondary School project in Yelwan Duguri when the vehicle reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and somersaulted multiple times. Some of the occupants were thrown out of the vehicle during the crash.
Victims suffered varying degrees of injuries, including fractures, head injuries, and bruises. They were first taken to the Yelwan Duguri Cottage Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, for further medical care.
The injured journalists are from different media organisations, including television stations and print outlets, and were part of the press team covering the NEDC’s official activities in the state.
Reacting to the incident, the Bauchi State Government expressed sympathy and assured that the medical expenses of the injured journalists would be covered. Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were recorded, and most of the victims are responding positively to treatment.
The accident has again highlighted concerns about road safety and the risks journalists face while carrying out their professional duties, especially during official assignments that involve long-distance travel.
